Parent education

The KEMH Parent Education department offers a wide range of classes to help prepare and assist women receiving care at KEMH for the birth of their baby, ongoing care and the transition to parenthood. The department is staffed by clinical midwives. Student midwives are allocated to the department as part of their midwifery training.

Charges may apply for services offered by the Parent Education department if the woman registered for care at KEMH is not registered with Medicare.

Hospital tours

Tours are conducted by midwives three days a week and start in the main entrance of KEMH Bagot Road Subiaco.

  • Monday morning at 9.30am 
  • Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at 6.00pm
No children are permitted. Bookings are essential.

Antenatal classes

Bookings for classes are essential; please contact the Parent Education team to book your place. Please book in early to avoid disappointment. Your partner or support person is welcome to attend our classes with you.

Healthy pregnancy discussion 

  • Monday at 6.00pm to 8.30pm

The healthy pregnancy discussion is for women who are between 12 and 20 pregnant. The session provides an enjoyable evening for women and their partner or support person focused on understanding the physical changes pregnancy brings. This session involves discussion with a midwife, dietitian and physiotherapist. 

Childbirth and parenting courses

These courses are offered to first time mothers and their partner or support person.

Five week series

  • Tuesday or Wednesday from 7.00pm to 9.00pm

Condensed course (over two sessions)

  • Option 1: Friday 8.45am to 2.30pm and Monday 6.30pm to 9.00pm 
  • Option 2: Saturday 8.45am to 2.30pm and Monday 6.30pm to 9.00pm

Topics include:

  • when to come to hospital, normal labour and active birth
  • methods of pain relief, induction of labour and assisted birth
  • introduction to breastfeeding
  • parenting and postnatal issues.
It is recommended that you also attend a breastfeeding and physiotherapy class.

Breastfeeding workshop 

  • Monday 1.00pm to 3.00pm 
  • Thursday 1.00pm to 3.00pm
The breastfeeding workshop provides the opportunity for all pregnant women to learn positioning and attachment techniques in a small group setting. 

Vaginal Birth after Caesarean (VBAC) 

For women and their partner or support person planning a vaginal birth after a previous caesarean birth. 

Planning a positive caesarean birth 

For women and their partner or support person who are booked for a caesarean birth. 

Multiple birth class 

An evening specifically designed for women and their partner or support person expecting twins or triplets. 

A multiple birth breastfeeding class is also offered.

Physiotherapy classes - Skills for birth and beyond

Bookings should be made directly via the Physiotherapy department on: (08) 6458 2790.

This class provides the opportunity to practice relaxation, breath awareness, massage and positioning to improve your comfort during pregnancy and childbirth. 

Family Birth Centre and Midwifery Group Practice

The Family Birth Centre and Midwifery Group Practice midwives hold their own parent information sessions. Please discuss this with your midwife if you are interested in attending.

Community Midwifery Program 

The Community Midwifery Program offers antenatal classes. Please discuss this with your midwife if you are interested in attending.

Women who have KEMH as their supporting hospital can also access KEMH specific services.

Postnatal support

Baby massage

  • Thursday 10.30am to 11.30am
Learn the correct techniques from a qualified instructor. Places are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment. 

Open House Postnatal Program

  • Every second and fourth Tuesday of the month from 1.30pm to 3.00pm
A series of informal discussions led by a Parent Educator and a guest speaker exploring a range of topics relating to newborns and women’s health. The program is available here.

Please note bookings are not required for the Open House Postnatal Program.
