GP shared-care is an option provided at many hospitals that allows you to continue to see your general practitioner (GP) for antenatal appointments during your pregnancy.
An initial antenatal appointment will be made at the shared-care hospital at approximately 19 weeks of pregnancy. All further appointments will continue with your GP until approximately 36 weeks of pregnancy after which your appointments will continue at the hospital until you give birth.
For details of GPs who offer shared-care in your area, contact the antenatal clinic at your local hospital. A GP shared-care directory is also available from the King Edward Memorial Hospital antenatal clinic on (08) 6458 2222.
All GPs who undertake shared-care must be registered medical practitioners, have appropriate medical defence cover and have antenatal experience.
