The primary role of the Statewide Obstetric Support Unit (SOSU) is to support clinicians
delivering obstetric and maternity services throughout the State - to enable them to provide the highest quality
service possible.
This involves working with metropolitan and country health services, across both public and private sectors, to:
- Promote the use of evidence based guidelines
- Provide advice in applying the principles of clinical
governance
- Promote educational programs
and emergency drills aimed at improving safety and
quality of care
- Advise on workforce issues, including
recruitment and retention of staff
- Assist in professional development
- Support clinicians dealing with
difficult professional issues, such as offering
de-briefing following a traumatic obstetric outcome,
and assisting with mediation / conciliation where
requested
- Assist trainees to meet their educational
needs
