About the Service
The Maternal Fetal Medicine Service located at King Edward Memorial Hospital was commenced formally in 1992. The service provides tertiary level ultrasound assessment and diagnosis of pregnancy complications and ongoing pregnancy management by the multidisciplinary Maternal Fetal Medicine team.
The service provides maternal fetal medicine diagnosis and treatment, in particular of conditions such as congenital abnormalities, rhesus disease, intrauterine growth restriction, twin to twin transfusion syndrome and other conditions affecting the fetus.
The Maternal Fetal Medicine Service provides:
- Ultrasound imaging and diagnosis
- Fetal medicine consultation and treatment
- Fetal interventions such as amniocentesis, chorion villus sampling and fetal intravascular transfusion
- Fetal Echocardiography
- Fetal MRI
- Genetic Services of Western Australia – preconceptual, antenatal and postnatal counselling
- Neonatal Paediatric Services
- Paediatric Surgery
- Paediatric Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery
- Cytogenetics
- Perinatal Pathology Services
- Pastoral Care
- Psychological Medicines

- Obstetric ultrasound including mid-trimester 18-20 week morphology scan, fetal biophysical profile and growth assessment

- Referral to the Maternal Fetal Medicine Service can be made by telephone Monday to Friday 8am-5pm.
- Telephone consultation with Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialists welcomed. Please phone (08) 9340 2222 and ask to speak with Associate Professor Jan Dickinson or Professor John Newnham.
- All referrals are treated as urgent and will be appointed the next day or as appropriate.
- The referral letter can be either sent with the patient or faxed directly to the department.
