Midwifery-Led Options at KEMH

I’m Pregnant - Now what?

When you discover you are pregnant there are many things you will need to think about. One important issue for you and your family to discuss is where you might like your baby to be born, and what type of care you might like to receive. There are a number of options available that your GP should discuss with you.

  • You can have all your care in your closest public maternity hospital staffed by midwives and doctors. KEMH offers a range of choices for women in its local area such as midwifery-led antenatal care, midwifery team care and Family Birth Centre care. Consult the Pregnancy Care Booklet for further information about these options. Your GP can arrange a referral to KEMH for any of these care options or you can self-refer to the Family Birth Centre directly.
  • Your GP can also refer you to the Community Midwifery Program if you would like to have your baby at home.
  • You can choose to be referred to a private obstetrician for all your care during pregnancy, birth and the early postnatal period as a private patient in a public or private hospital setting.

Midwifery-led Options at KEMH

At KEMH the midwives and doctors work in partnership to provide you with a range of care options to meet your needs. Even if you need specialised medical care you will always have a midwife to support you through your birthing journey.

Family Birth Centre

The Family Birth Centre is a home-like maternity care facility located on the grounds of KEMH. The Centre encourages families to be involved in planning and, enjoy the events, of pregnancy and childbirth in a safe, personalised, comfortable setting.

Community Midwifery Program

The Community Midwifery Program is a care option whereby a midwife provides one-to-one care to a woman during her entire childbearing experience. Women who utilise this service choose home as the birthing environment.
