Working in Neonatal Intensive Care

Neonatal intensive care is an exciting, highly technical and challenging area of nursing. It includes:

• continuous cardio-respiratory support to assist in the maintenance of life
• specialised assessment and clinical care
• care of a sick neonate who may require complex surgical interventions
• high dependency and intermediate level neonatal care
• family support and parent crafting skills

Nursing Career Opportunities

Permanent full-time, part-time and casual positions are available for:

• graduate nurses with experience working in general nursing areas
• registered nurses and midwives with recent experience in acute adult or paediatric nursing
• enrolled nurses with recent acute experience

Neonatal trained nurses are highly sought after. Many career opportunities in areas of advanced clinical practice, education, research and clinical management are available in the NCCU. Professional development programs maintain ongoing training and support for all levels of nursing staff. These include clinical nurse programs to assist in role development. There are also neonatal skills study days for nurses to upgrade their skills in neonatal nursing care.
