Perinatal Pathology Cremations

The law permits our department to cremate babies that are stillborn and of less than 28 weeks duration, provided that parental consent is given.

There are two options available to parents:

  • Interment in the KEMH Memorial Garden
For those who choose to take part in the Memorial Service, babies are cremated together and the cremated remains are retained and interred at the monthly interment of ashes service held in the KEMH memorial garden. Parents and their family are encouraged to attend and inter a portion of the ashes.
  • Separate Ashes
Parents may request for their baby to be cremated separately. The cremated remains are retained for return to parents for interment at a private ceremony at a later date.
