The Clinical Physics Division is responsible for medical physics services in support of Radiology and Nuclear Medicine Departments across East Metropolitan Health Service (EMHS). The division also provides advisory services to South Metropolitan Health Service (SMHS) for the delivery of ionising and non-ionising (e.g. laser) radiation for diagnosis and patient treatment.

Specialities within the Clinical Physics Division include:

• Medical Physics, which applies diagnostic imaging medical physics (DIMP) services, to ensure that diagnostic and treatment facilities across EMHS and SMHS comply with operational safety, quality and equipment compliance standards and to assist with the safe and effective delivery of therapeutic ionising radiation and related procedures to the patient.
   
• Radiation Safety Management, which is provided by the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO), supported by local service based safety officers, to ensure that all facilities comply with radiation safety standards applied to diagnostic radiology equipment and services, staff practices and patient treatment procedures. The RSO has responsibility to the Radiological Council for the quality delivery of radiation safety procedures in support of the relevant Hospital Executive and the Director of Clinical Services as the ascribed hospital Registrant, under the Radiation Safety Act.

The Clinical Physics Division employs tertiary qualified Medical Physicists, accredited specialists in Diagnostic Physicists, Technical Officers and specialist Nurses.
