Visiting the hospital

Hospital visits on compassionate/medical grounds

If you are entering Western Australia under an exemption and have been granted permission on compassionate grounds to visit a patient in hospital within your quarantine period, you must phone ahead to the hospital to arrange this visit to ensure it is managed appropriately.

WHY? Precautions need to be put in place to protect staff and patients while you attend the hospital.

WA’s current travel restrictions are designed to prevent the spread of COVID-19 by limiting non-essential travel. This includes requiring approval to enter the State and a requirement to self-quarantine for 14 days – in case you are unknowingly carrying the COVID-19 virus.

If you are in self-quarantine you cannot undergo elective surgery. Contact the hospital to reschedule your surgery for when you are cleared from quarantine.

It is an offence to fail to follow the directions stipulated in your exemption. WA Police have the power to enforce these restrictions and you can be fined up to $50,000.

Visiting hours have changed.

COVID-19 visiting restrictions at our hospital have been partially eased, by increasing our visiting times.

King Edward Memorial Hospital will now open for visiting between 3pm and 7pm daily.

Up to two visitors at any one time are permitted with an inpatient during these hours. However for the safety of patients and staff, we ask our visitors to adhere to physical distancing requirements.

Labour and Birth Suite:

Two birthing partners are permitted to attend with a woman in labour on the labour and birth suite.

The same two birth partners can progress to the postnatal wards.  Once the birthing partners leave, they can return to the hospital between hospital visiting hours of 3pm and 7pm.

Theatres

Only one birthing partner can accompany a patient to theatre.

Imaging

One visitor is permitted with those attending the outpatient department.  Please note, no children under 16 are permitted into Imaging.

Outpatient Appointments

A maximum of one person may accompany you to outpatients.  In the event a child must attend your appointment with you, the KEMH Creche is available for children under 6 years (subject to availability).

All patients to KEMH will be screened either before their scheduled arrival or upon arrival to the ward or department they are attending.  Patients will be asked:

  • have you tested positive for COVID-19
  • do you have a fever or a cold or a flu-like illness, including symptoms such as, sore throat, cough, fatigue and difficulty breathing
  • have you travelled outside Western Australia and are therefore required to self-isolate for 14 days
  • have you been in contact with a confirmed case of coronavirus and are therefore required to self-isolate for 14 days.

Any queries or requests for exemptions should be directed to the Manager of the area you are attending.
