General Medicine Service – including Obstetric Physicians Clinic

Role of Service / Overview

The General Medicine Service at WNHS assists with the management of medical problems in preparation for pregnancy, during pregnancy and in the postpartum period. It also provides a service for those requiring physician management during gynaecological care. Referrals are accepted from across Western Australia, and if telehealth consultation is required please include this in the referral documentation.

 

Clinical Inclusion

This is service available for women from across Western Australia, and provides management of a wide range of medical problems in pregnancy including diabetes, thyroid disease, hypertension, rheumatological conditions, cardiac disease, respiratory, haematological and neurological conditions as well as pregnancy specific complications such as cholestasis of pregnancy and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.

A service is also provided for those requiring physician management whilst receiving gynaecological care at WNHS.

 

Clinical Exclusion

Preconception care not requiring an obstetric physician is provided via WNHS Preconception Clinic.

Women not requiring obstetric physician care can be referred to local maternity service provider.

 

Frequency of Clinic

Four clinics per week, with some clinics in conjunction with Maternal Fetal Medicine Obstetricians.

 

Referral to Include

Completed referral form – include clinical concerns, current medications, detailed past medical and obstetric history, copies of relevant investigations and letters from treating specialists.

For urgent referrals please contact the Obstetric Medicine Registrar or Physician on call via WNHS Switchboard (08) 6458 2222.

We are also happy to provide telephone advice if appropriate.

 

Referral Process

Antenatal referrals are made using the KEMH Antenatal Referral Form (PDF) (or equivalent form / template)
