Patient Blood Management and Haematology Service

Overview / role of service

The Clinical Nurse Consultant / Midwife for Patient Blood Management provides advice, discussion, and treatment options for:

  • Anaemia management
  • Infusion Unit – including IV iron, IV Immunoglobulin infusions and other blood products
  • Haemoglobinopathies
  • Blood refusal and planning for procedures

PathWest is the laboratory service provider for King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women. The hospital laboratories specialise in fetal, neonatal, obstetric and gynaecological laboratory medicine and are accredited by the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) Australia. The Haematology Department provides support to the Clinical Nurse Consultant / Midwife Patient Blood Management team.

 

Clinical inclusion

The Patient Blood Management / Haematology service is available for patients attending King Edward Memorial Hospital who require review and management for:

  • Anaemia
  • Clinical conditions that may require blood products – including IV iron, IV Immunoglobulin infusions and other blood products
  • Haemoglobinopathies
  • Planning of care for refusal of blood products

 

Clinical exclusion

Not a patient receiving care at King Edward Memorial Hospital – please refer to local maternity service or local hospital haematology department.

 

Frequency of clinic

Whilst there is not an allocated outpatient clinic for this service, the Clinical Nurse Consultant / Midwife – Patient Blood Management team reviews patients according to individual clinical need.

 

Referral to include

  • Clinical concerns
  • Pregnancy status and gestation and EDD if applicable
  • Full medical history including obstetric and gynaecological history
  • Copies of recent FBP, iron studies and relevant results pertaining to clinical concerns

 

Urgent referral

For patients requiring urgent review within seven days contact the Clinical Nurse Consultant Patient Blood Management via WNHS Switchboard on (08) 6458 2222 page 3257, 7am to 3.30pm Monday to Friday.

 

Referral process

All referrals from GPs to this service are sent to the Central Referral Service WA (CRS). Ensure you provide the relevant information in the referral to enable appropriate triage, including required investigation results and letters from treating medical practitioners if relevant and clearly request the Patient Blood Management / Haematology Service.

Referrals using GP software that include all the relevant history and information are also welcome using CRS referral form templates (external site).
