Private Patients

We’re committed to providing a high standard of care and treatment to every patient.

KEMH has a Private Patient Program available to those patients with appropriate private health insurance (maternity cover if you’re having a baby) who visit our regular clinics but would like the opportunity to make their hospital stay a little more comfortable.

To be a private patient, you must be an Australian resident and have a valid Medicare card.

With appropriate private health insurance cover, a patient will have no out-of-pocket expenses for their hospital stay and procedures (e.g. hospital accommodation, prosthetics, pathology, radiology, ICU, theatre fees).

By using private health insurance for admission, you’ll have access to team care during your hospital stay. This means continuity of care from the same group of multidisciplinary health professionals under the leadership of a consultant.

Opting to use your private health insurance also directly helps the hospital because the money from the health fund comes directly to KEMH and is used to enhance patient care and hospital experience.

The benefits of being a private patient

All patients – public or private – receive the same quality of treatment and range of services. However, there are additional benefits that patients can enjoy by using their private health insurance.

No out-of-pocket expense

KEMH offers a no out-of-pocket expense guarantee to private patients for their hospital stay and procedures (e.g. hospital accommodation, pathology, radiology, ICU, theatre fees). Your specialist doctor/consultant will provide medical care with no out-of-pocket expense unless they advise you differently.

Our Private Patient Liaison Officers can help determine whether your cover applies to the specialist care you’ll receive at the hospital.

Complimentary amenities

To thank you for choosing to use your private health insurance, you’ll receive some complimentary amenities to make your stay more comfortable including vouchers for free TV and newspapers and evening meal visitor vouchers.

Single rooms

Most of the hospital rooms are single rooms, except those in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. While we can’t guarantee a specific room as the clinical needs of our patients take priority, but there’s a strong chance you’ll have access to a single room.

Neonatal patients

You can also opt to use your private health insurance if your baby needs care from our specialist neonatal team. Our team of specialists will care for your baby with no out-of-pocket expenses.

If your baby remains an inpatient after you discharge, you will need to add your baby to your health fund policy as soon as possible to enable your baby to be private. You will receive voucher booklets that are redeemable at the café and gift shop each week until your baby discharges.
